This page describes the repro vintage "Fat" and "54 V" necks with pics of the back and profile. I have chosen to have Bill make the Kali Music guitars with both these neck carves to offer a choice to my customers who want a vintage look and feel but would not be comfortable with the Fat neck carve. I enjoy both of them and would be hard pressed to choose one over the other, but I will point out that the '54 V is closer to necks currently in production by Fender while still providing a great vintage look, vibe and feel. When viewed from the front, they both appear exactly alike.
The Fat neck, known affectionately as the "Baseball Bat", is crafted to be very close to the original necks used by Fender until approximately 1954. The Radius is a standard 10" and 15/16" depth is maintained the full length of the neck. At the nut it is 1 5/8" wide and has a circumference of 2 7/8". It widens to 2 1/8" at the 13th fret where the circumference is 3 1/8". It is hefty and offers excellent hand and wrist support, even for a small hand. As Bill ages and finishes them, they become silky smooth allowing fast movement up an down the neck.

The '54 V neck (see pics below) is similar to necks used by Fender from approximately 1954 to 1958. The original Fender necks had a pronounced V shape at the nut with a gentle V running down to about the 9th fret. Our reproduction has a pronounced V immediately behind the nut that transforms into a gentle V at the 1st fret and becomes a C curve at about the 7th fret. The Radius is a standard 10". At the nut it is 1" deep, 1 5/8" wide and has a circumference of 2 3/4". At the 1st fret the depth is 7/8" and the circumference is 2 5/8". At the 13th fret it widens to 2 3/32" where the circumference is 3". The depth of 7/8" is maintained to the 14th fret, where the neck begins to flatten as it reaches the heel. It is a very good combination of vintage look and feel with a slightly smaller depth and circumference than the Fat neck. The '54 V neck is very comfortable and fast with a pleasing feel as the carve gently changes as you move up the frets.
